Serving / Setting / Hitting

Serving  Newer players will focus on learning overhand serving techniques, including proper toss, arm swing, footwork and gaining confidence. Experienced players will focus will be on the mechanics of different serves (float, top spin, jump and jump float). Serve placement will be a sub focus.  Once mechanics of the serve is established, players will be asked to serve with a purpose, picking a location on the court to serve. 

Setting & Hitting: The fundamentals of the setting position including footwork to the ball, hand position, and release on the ball will be taught. During the hitting section players will focus on hitting approach/footwork, correct swinging technique and jump mechanics.  At the end of this clinic we will put the skills together so athletes can experience setting a ball to their team mate, and hitters will begin to learn timing and experience hitting from a player set ball rather than coach toss.  For new players all athletes will rotate through the setter position.   8th grade - Intermediate/Advanced  players with a minimum of 2 years club volleyball experience are able to register for the 8th-10th grade session.

All Skills Focus & Review

Setting & Overhead Passing -   The fundamentals of the setting position including footwork to the ball, hand position, and release on the ball will be taught and reinforced for the intermediately level player. We will transition these skills to Overhead Passing and the proper mechanics for all players to pass the ball quickly and accurately on the first contact regardless of position.  

Overhand Serving - designed for players that want to work on their serving technique. Intermediate to advance players will work on float, jump float, serving aggressively, serving zones, and serving to score points. We will focus on efficiency of movement, proper timing, and placement of the ball to ensure a consistent serve.    

Hitting & Blocking:  Newer players will focus on skill acquisition and experienced players will focus on reinforcement. Rhythm and timing in conjunction with footwork is a major emphasis.  During the hitting portion arm action, correct swing technique, approach and jump mechanics will be addressed as athletes learn to “dial in” optimum hitting mechanics.  Players will be grouped according to age and skill level.

Serve placement will be a sub focus.  Once mechanics of the serve is established, players will be asked to serve with a purpose, picking a location on the court to serve. The 2nd half of the clinic will work on the basic techniques and footwork associated with passing.  We will transition to reading the server, passing platform and movement to the ball with proper platform.  Focus will be on reading the server, passing platform and movement to the ball with our platform. We will teach intermediate and advanced players to tempo their pass to allow for a quick offense.

Tactical Serving - designed to increase the tactical understanding of the serve. The effectiveness of all serving styles Jump, Jump Float, Standing Float, etc.] will be addressed. For players who have not yet developed their jump serve coaches will teach the basics of jump serving.  Coaches work with higher level participants to 1) develop different styles of jump serving, or 2) improve an existing serve. Participants must have a consistent and strong overhand.  Participants MUST have a consistent, strong and accurate overhand serve.  

Dig Your Guts Out – designed to deliver intense, high-repetition defensive training and is the perfect opportunity to hone defensive skills. Clinic is designed to handle a range of experience and ability; however, this clinic is NOT for beginners. Participants are grouped according to ability on multiple courts.  8th grade - Intermediate/Advanced  players with a minimum of 2 years club volleyball experience are able to register for the 8th-10th grade session.

Emergency Defense:   Players will practice defensive skills through drills that will help them prepare for the randomness of what you’ll have to deal with on the volleyball court. Quick reaction for tips that aren’t close enough to play with your platform, balls in the net and odd bounces r trajectory off the block are just a few of the situations that will be covered.  

This camp is designed to thoroughly prepare athletes physically, technically and mentally for tryouts. Athletes will work on various phases of the tryout process, while working on skill development.

DATES: July 28th - July 31st (Monday - Thursday)

TIMES: MORNING SESSION - 4th - 6th Grade 9 AM to 12 noon

AFTERNOON SESSION - 7th - 8th Grade 1 PM - 4 PM

Space is limited. Players spot not reserved until payment is received.

Cancellation Policy - any cancellation request must be sent via email to [email protected] with the subject line "Tryout Prep Camp Cancellation." In the body of the email please list the account/parents name and players name. The date/time stamp of the email will be used to discern the refund amount, if any. 

Refunds exclude the $3 processing fee originally charged by the 3rd party credit card service.

SUMMER ACADEMY CAMP 2025

This camp is for players that want to develop and train in a group setting with instruction from our current travel team coaches. The focus will be on fundamental skills and the use of proper technique. Beginner to Advance skill players are welcome. Athletes will be divided based on the information listed below.   All practices will be held at the PSVC facility in Mt. Pleasant. 

Monday - Thursday

Dates: June 16th - 19th

Time: 9am -12pm, or 1pm - 4pm

Cost: $225 per player

Location: Palmetto Strikers, 1007 Johnnie Dodds Blvd, Mt. Pleasant, SC

Players will be placed on courts based on skill level using the evaluation process below. This is so the trained PSVC coaches can meet the needs of the players and plan practice to get the most growth in volleyball skill. Please note this is a training program meant to focus on the basic volleyball skills while increasing the player's skill and court knowledge. NOTE: There may be a need for players of various skill levels to be placed together, or moved to maximize learning and development.

PSVC White Level (Beginner)

These players are new or relatively new to the game of volleyball. Players are still working on the basic fundamentals of the game. These players have played less than two years of organized volleyball (school or club)

PSVC Gray Level (Intermediate)To be placed at this level players MUST have 1 or more seasons of organized volleyball experience and meet 2 of the 5 following requirements:

1.  over hand serve the ball over the net from the end line

2.  forearm pass with a partner for at least 30 seconds without the ball hitting the floor

3.  serve/receive the ball in the court with the pass the height of the antenna

4.  hand set 5 balls positioned to the middle or outside hitter positions

5.  have a hitting approach and contact the ball

PSVC Blue Level (Advanced)To be placed at this level players MUST have 2 or more seasons of organized volleyball experience (school or club) and meet 3 of the 5 following requirements:

1.  over hand serve the ball over the net from the end line
